Business Of Consulting: 'Big Four' Eye MBA Talent For Reach Into Consultancy – BusinessBecause

Latest post from Evan Vitale Consulting -

A job at a big professional services firm is not a hard sell for most graduates but it is still striking how many the combined forces of KPMG, EY, Deloitte and PwC draw into their mitts.

As the “big four” accounting firms move away from their audit roots and into more lucrative advisory work, fresh jobs abound in everything from strategy to public sector consulting.

“All the accounting firms are significantly growing their advisory practices,” says Stephane Ponce, global consulting lead for career development at INSEAD, the international business school.

The firms are reassessing their business strategies and are in a mad dash for consulting clients. While combined audit revenues for the big four have shrunk by $5 billion over five years, consulting has boomed, with revenues increasing by $16 billion over the same period.

The big four are investing heavily in new talent, as they use their brands and existing audit client relationships to offer full-service work, becoming one-stop-shops for corporations. EY has been one of the most aggressive. Over the past two years the company has snapped up the Parthenon Group and Integrc, both boutique consulting firms.

Radhika Chadwick, a partner at EY, says there is enormous potential to increase the firm’s talent pool. “We are hiring up and down the organization and the most demand is for senior-level individuals,” she says.

A renewed desire among business to spend on consultants is fanning the flames. Navigating increasing regulation and keeping pace with digital innovation has proved to be a challenge.

Mazhar Hussain, a director at KPMG, says digital is a huge growth area across industries, with clients scrambling to deal with data, analytics and to form long-term tech strategies.

“Seven years ago the iPhone didn’t exist and we all used Nokia phones,” he laughs. “Now that acceleration is happening at an expedited rate.”

Big data has been one of the big disruptors. “Data and analytics has become part of the fabric of how we do business,” says Matthew Guest, head of Deloitte’s digital strategy practice for EMEA. “The tools are becoming to us what the office productivity tools — word processing and spreadsheets — were to the previous generation.”

But the difficulty in finding talent to deal with the digital deluge has spurred contest among the top firms for the brightest graduates. “We are seeing high demand for our students — all of the big four firms recruit on campus,” says Laurence Verbiest, an associate director at the Georgetown McDonough MBA Career Center. “Digital skills are one of many that are in demand.”

Some have resorted to buying management consultancies with ready-made specialists. Over the past three years, Deloitte acquired boutique strategy house Monitor Group, and PwC agreed to buy Booz and Company, a mid-tier firm now branded as Strategy&. “There has certainly been a lot of growth and M&A activity,” says Stephen Pidgeon at the Tuck School of Business.

In each case the acquisition has boosted demand for consultants, he says: “These companies are competing more and more with the ‘big three’ — McKinsey, Bain and BCG.”

While the big four auditors have expanded their advisory practices, the incumbent consulting firms have also grown their service offerings. As well as the three market leaders, ECG Consultants, ZS Associates, and A.T. Kearney are doing much to attract top talent, says Chris Weber, associate director for careers at UCLA Anderson School.

However, he is in no doubt about the shifting job opportunities for his students with the big four: “The landscape for consulting is changing rapidly.”

Chip Cards? Small Business Owners Unaware of Planned Changes – ABC News

Latest post from Evan Vitale Consulting -
Associated Press

A majority of small-businesses owners are unaware of an impending shift that could leave them liable for fraud committed with a new generation of chip-imbedded credit cards.

That’s the finding of a survey by Wells Fargo & Co., which asked 600 small-business owners about the Oct. 1 deadline to get card readers and software to handle the new credit cards. Retailers and other businesses without equipment to handle the cards could be liable starting Oct. 1 if a customer commits fraud with a chip card.

But in the Wells Fargo survey, only 49 percent of owners of businesses that use card readers for transactions said they were aware of the deadline.

The U.S. credit card industry is switching to chip cards because it’s harder for thieves to counterfeit them than it is to make fake magnetic-stripe cards. Chip cards have been in use in Europe for more than a decade, and security experts say there is more fraud in the U.S. than other countries because of the prevalence of magnetic stripe cards. Card issuers are still in the process of sending chip cards to their customers. The goal is for all magnetic stripe cards to eventually be replaced.

Most small business owners haven’t made the switch to readers that can process chip-card transactions. Only 31 percent of those who use card readers said they have the new equipment, and only 29 percent said they plan to get it by Oct. 1.

Thirty-four percent plan to upgrade their equipment at some point in the future, and 21 percent said they don’t plan to get the new readers.

Forty-six percent of owners who don’t plan to get new readers by the deadline said they don’t want to pay the costs for buying and installing the equipment and software, which can run into thousands of dollars. And 41 percent said they’re not concerned about being liable if fraud is committed.

Many large retailers have already swapped out their card reading systems. Some of the new systems are asking shoppers to dip the cards into a slot on the readers rather than swipe them.

The Wells Fargo survey was conducted in early July.

Old Mutual champions Africa business – CNBC

Latest post from Evan Vitale Consulting -

Old Mutual has reported a 20 percent rise in adjusted operating profit for the first half of 2015, as the CEO championed growth in African markets.

The financial services, banking and insurance group reported a 14 percent rise in profits out of South Africa, and a 31 percent profit increase in the rest of the continent.

At constant currencies, adjusted operating profit hit £904 million ($1.4 billion) for the first six months of the year.

“We can keep that momentum up. I see the emerging markets still being a huge growth impact,” Old Mutual CEO Julian Roberts told CNBC Tuesday morning.

Though low commodity prices have put a strain on emerging market consumers, Roberts said there was little to worry about in terms of business growth and it was “far from a liability.”

Even depreciation of the South African rand — down over 13 percent against the dollar over the past six months — has been outweighed by “reasonable GDP,” Roberts said.

“When you look at the overall growth from our emerging markets, you can factor in a degree of depreciation of the currency and still produce good value for shareholders.”

Roberts also praised performance in the developed markets, where UK profits were up 26 percent, when including recent European divestments and the recent takeover of investment services firm Quilter Cheviot.

“At the end of the day, our businesses are running extremely well. The UK business is running from strength to strength,” Roberts said.

The group raised their dividend to 2.65 pence, up from 2.45 pence

Roberts, who announced he would be stepping down back in April, will be succeeded by Bruce Hemphill on November 1. Hemphill is expected to focus on boost the group’s African business – he joins Old Mutual from Standard Banking Group, the continent’s largest banking group by assets and earnings.
