Manetta was hired to boost the development corporation’s activity by creating a website and marketing brochures, writing a business plan and meeting with not-for-profits that could benefit from tax-free bond financing, said Joanne Minieri, the corporation’s board chairman and top economic development adviser to Suffolk County Executive Steve Bellone.

“Anthony has a proven record with his work at the IDA,” she said.

Manetta called it “an opportunity to turn around the EDC with a new strategic vision,” making it “a significant resource for economic growth in Suffolk County.”

Minieri said the corporation’s board of directors did not see the need to seek applications from other development consultants besides Manetta, whom Bellone championed for the IDA job in June 2012 despite Manetta’s having limited experience. Manetta also is a former vice chairman of the Suffolk County Independence Party.

In March, Manetta resigned unexpectedly from his IDA post, which paid $155,000 per year. The IDA board, which Minieri also leads and has the same members as the development corporation’s board, immediately agreed to pay Manetta $10,000 a month to help with the transition to a successor. Those payments ended several months ago.
