BAE Systems, the North American subsidiary of the British defense and aerospace contractor, is looking for an expert to lead its new cyber consulting arm.

The McLean contractor’s consulting firm BAE Systems Applied Intelligence, formerly Detica, is rolling out the new cyber practice over the next six-to-nine months, said Dale Guise, vice president of cyber products. In several months, the new team might be comprised of about 12 or 13 employees, Guise said.

Unlike BAE Systems overall, which largely serves public sector customers, the cyber consulting firm would focus almost exclusively on commercial clients, offering various services including incident response. Guise talked with Capital Business about the head of cyber advisory services position.

Why is BAE Systems creating this new group now? Is it in response to increased cyber attacks?

We offer these services in other regions, but we have really only expanded into cyber in the North American region in the past few years … The threat is certainly greater [than before], but this mostly ties into the corporate strategy, in terms of the Americas being a key growth area for cyber [consulting.]

What is the head of cyber advisory services’s general responsibilities, and what might a day look like?

It is a combination of a hands-on and a leadership role … Working with clients to help them understand their cyber risk, to be able to perform risk assessment, to be able to review various security architectures, security policies, their incident response readiness plans … to help companies ensure that they really are doing everything they can do to be prepared [and] to protect themselves against a cyber attack.

At least 50 percent of their time [is spent] interfacing with customers, being a hands on contributor. … Then they would step back and spend a period of time reviewing the documents, and reviewing the company’s information. Generally 20 to 25 percent [of time is spent] on-site [at BAE].

What are challenges of dealing with customers who don’t understand cybersecurity?

One of the challenges will be to make sure we understand the regulatory aspects for different industries. For example, if we’re in financial services, there are a certain set of regulations; if we’re in health care, there are different sets.

[For some customers], there will be some resistance to change. An organization may think they are pretty well protected in terms of security, so when we are presenting our findings, we have to do it in an authoritative way to make clear the risks [and] the vulnerabilities we are identifying, and that the subject’s risk is real based on our broad knowledge and experience.
