Last night Consulting Magazine organised the second edition of its annual ‘Excellence in Social and Community Investments’ Gala Awards dinner, a ceremony aimed at honouring the extraordinary efforts of consulting firms and their consultants that have in the past 12 months made the biggest social impact. 15 consulting firms managed to scoop an award.

Although not always widely known, the consulting industry across the globe does a tremendous amount of pro bono work. This includes among others “free consulting”, significantly discounted work, community outreach initiatives, employee-motivated volunteer projects, and other social and community investment and engagement. The Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) comes with a price tag however – each year, consulting firms invest hundreds of millions, and possibly billions, of dollars in time, effort and sweat equity on engagements that serve a social and community cause. In return, consultants receive a sense of fulfilment from contributing to a higher purpose, while firms typically reap the benefits in the areas of branding, recruitment and employee commitment.
