The nonprofit global testing agency NSF International has acquired the medical device testing and consulting company Avarent LLC.

Terms of the deal were not released, but NSF said it plans to change the Libertyville, Ill.-based company’s name to NSF Avarent.

Avarent’s founder, Ian Fleming, and principal Thomas Dzierozynski will join Ann Arbor-based NSF as executive vice presidents and lead the integration of Avarent into NSF Medical Device Consulting, NSF said in a release.

Avarent brings 80 global consultants to NSF’s ranks.

The addition of Avarent expands NSF International’s portfolio of medical device services to both NSF International and Avarent clients, combining Avarent’s expertise in medical device products and processes development, design control, validation, quality assurance and regulatory compliance with NSF’s experience in regulatory compliance and quality management systems throughout the medical device product life cycle.

Additionally, Avarent clients will gain access to NSF’s global network of accredited laboratories and client support in more than 160 countries, including across Asia, the Middle East, Africa, Europe and Central and Latin America.

The Avarent acquisition builds on NSF’s 2012 and 2011 acquisitions of the Washington, D.C.-based regulatory compliance consulting firm Becker & Associates Consulting Inc., the United Kingdom-based medical device training and consulting firm Pink Associates and  the Connecticut-based contract laboratory Pharmalytica Services LLC.
